Why PM Courses Don’t Work (And What Real PM Training Looks Like)

The PM course industry issues hundreds of thousands of certifications a year and produces almost nobody who can run a project on day one. In this video, I break down why that is by design, and give you the four-criteria filter that separates real PM training from trivia practice with a project management theme.

Project management is a performance domain, not a knowledge domain. You can pass the PMP and not be able to write a useful charter, and that gap between knowing and doing is exactly what hiring managers screen for. Courses sell what scales. Competence comes from the same place it always has: repetition, consequences, feedback, and defending your work.

In this video, I cover:

  • The structural reason PM courses keep failing certified candidates
  • Knowing vs doing: why the two skills do not transfer
  • Criterion 1: real decisions under pressure, with no answer key
  • Criterion 2: consequences that compound across a continuous project arc
  • Criterion 3: feedback from someone who has actually run projects
  • Criterion 4: a defense moment in front of other people
