Between 2022 and 2023, I earned over $300,000 in a single year as a project manager—all without a PMP, CAPM, or any other certification. And the best part? I did it while traveling the world, working remotely from places like Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Medellín, and Cusco.

How did I get here? It wasn’t luck. It came down to a handful of hard-earned lessons—five realizations that completely changed how I think about work, career growth, and money.

1. Learn From Someone Who’s Already Done It

When I started, I thought the path was simple:

• Become a project coordinator.

• Study for my PMP.

• Then, finally, become a project manager.

But I had no idea what industries paid the most, what skills were worth mastering, or how long I should stay in each role. I was just guessing.

Everything changed when I met a mentor—someone with 20+ years of project management experience. He gave me clarity I never would’ve found on my own:

• Which industries had the highest-paying contracts.

• Which skills to double down on.

• Why contracts often pay better than full-time jobs.

In a few months, he passed down knowledge that would’ve taken me a decade of trial and error to learn. That’s when I realized: the fastest way to level up is to learn from someone who’s already done it.

• Earn more per contract.

• Work across different industries.

• Gain broader experience that makes them more valuable.

Early in my career, I interviewed for a project coordinator role. Halfway through, the interviewer mentioned it was actually for a project manager position.

Instantly, I shifted. I spoke and acted like a project manager, recalling projects I had led—even if they were small ones like building a website.

What actually got people noticed was results. The top performers weren’t working longer—they were working smarter. They focused only on tasks that moved projects forward.

Here’s a quick example:

Imagine you pay me $5,000 to build a website. You might assume it’ll take me 40 hours. But if I deliver a perfect, fully functional site in 2 hours, would you pay me less?

Of course not. You’re paying for the result, not the time.

Employers and clients think the same way. They don’t care how many hours you work—they care whether you deliver outcomes that matter.

5. Everything Counts

Every skill you build, every project you take on—it all adds up.

Years ago, I built websites and apps just for fun. At the time, I didn’t think it would matter. But those side projects taught me about databases, coding, testing, and debugging. Years later, those skills helped me land contracts managing IT projects, server refreshes, and application upgrades.

On the flip side, wasted time counts too. If you spend years watching Netflix instead of building skills, you’ll eventually find yourself behind your peers.
