5 Realizations That Helped Me Make $300K in a Single Year as a Project Manager

Between 2022 and 2023, I earned over $300,000 in a single year as a project manager—all without a PMP, CAPM, or any other certification. And the best part? I did it while traveling the world, working remotely from places like Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Medellín, and Cusco.

How did I get here? It wasn’t luck. It came down to a handful of hard-earned lessons—five realizations that completely changed how I think about work, career growth, and money.

If you’re an aspiring project manager, or you’re already in the role but stuck, these lessons could change the entire trajectory of your career.

1. Learn From Someone Who’s Already Done It

When I started, I thought the path was simple:

  • Become a project coordinator.

  • Study for my PMP.

  • Then, finally, become a project manager.

But I had no idea what industries paid the most, what skills were worth mastering, or how long I should stay in each role. I was just guessing.

Everything changed when I met a mentor—someone with 20+ years of project management experience. He gave me clarity I never would’ve found on my own:

  • Which industries had the highest-paying contracts.

  • Which skills to double down on.

  • Why contracts often pay better than full-time jobs.

In a few months, he passed down knowledge that would’ve taken me a decade of trial and error to learn. That’s when I realized: the fastest way to level up is to learn from someone who’s already done it.

👉 If you want to save years of frustration, find a mentor or a community that can shortcut your growth.

2. The Employee Mentality Will Keep You Stuck

Ask yourself:

  • Do you believe that getting a full-time job means “security”?

  • Do you aim to do just enough at work so you don’t get fired?

  • Have you gotten comfortable and stopped growing in your role?

If you said yes to any of these, you’re stuck in the employee mentality.

This mindset keeps you safe but stagnant. You cover the bills, put food on the table, and stop reaching for more.

In contrast, those with a consultant or business mentality know they can’t get comfortable. They’re always sharpening skills, seeking growth, and staying hungry. That’s why consultants often:

  • Earn more per contract.

  • Work across different industries.

  • Gain broader experience that makes them more valuable.

If you want to increase your opportunities and income, you need to drop the employee mindset and think like a consultant.

3. People Rise to Meet Expectations

Early in my career, I interviewed for a project coordinator role. Halfway through, the interviewer mentioned it was actually for a project manager position.

Instantly, I shifted. I spoke and acted like a project manager, recalling projects I had led—even if they were small ones like building a website.

That experience taught me about the Pygmalion Effect (a.k.a. the self-fulfilling prophecy): people rise to the expectations placed on them.

If others expect you to lead, you’ll act like a leader. If you set higher expectations for yourself, you’ll rise to meet them.

👉 Stop waiting for permission. Start calling yourself a leader and acting like one. Your mindset will shift, and so will the way others perceive you.

4. Results Are the Only Thing That Matter

Early in my career, I thought staying late and working extra hours would get me noticed. It didn’t.

What actually got people noticed was results. The top performers weren’t working longer—they were working smarter. They focused only on tasks that moved projects forward.

Here’s a quick example:

Imagine you pay me $5,000 to build a website. You might assume it’ll take me 40 hours. But if I deliver a perfect, fully functional site in 2 hours, would you pay me less?

Of course not. You’re paying for the result, not the time.

Employers and clients think the same way. They don’t care how many hours you work—they care whether you deliver outcomes that matter.

👉 Focus relentlessly on results, and you’ll separate yourself from the pack.

5. Everything Counts

Every skill you build, every project you take on—it all adds up.

Years ago, I built websites and apps just for fun. At the time, I didn’t think it would matter. But those side projects taught me about databases, coding, testing, and debugging. Years later, those skills helped me land contracts managing IT projects, server refreshes, and application upgrades.

On the flip side, wasted time counts too. If you spend years watching Netflix instead of building skills, you’ll eventually find yourself behind your peers.

👉 Remember: everything counts. The small skills you’re learning today might be the exact reason you land a six-figure opportunity tomorrow.

Final Thoughts

These five realizations shaped my career and helped me reach $300K in a single year:

  1. Learn from someone ahead of you.

  2. Drop the employee mentality.

  3. Rise to expectations (yours and others’).

  4. Focus on results, not hours.

  5. Remember that everything counts.

You don’t need a PMP or a fancy certification to achieve success. You need clarity, the right mindset, and relentless focus on results.
